Unusual Amount of Rescues Lately: July 10th: The lifeguards on the NW Florida Gulf Coast have been busier than usual for the last two weeks due to the longer period groundswells from Alex and TD #2. There were times when they couldn't finish one rescue before being called to another. I was filming on the beach during the swells and witnessed and filmed numerous near drownings and rescues. Unfortunately, one life was lost at Navarre Beach but the number would have been much higher without the quick responses from our area lifeguards. As a surfer, I was proud to see how many rescues and assists were done by surfers. Your knowledge of waves and currents literally was a life saver. There are people alive today because of you.
Surf Smooth Holds Record for the Most Accurate Hurricane Forecast: Did you know that Surf Smooth has beaten all the Major Hurricane Forecasters for the last 10 years in a row and has a 100% accuracy record in predicting the number of Hurricanes that will occur each year? So, after careful analysis, here's our prediction for the 2010 season:
- There will be 0-100 named storms
- Between 0-50 of these will become hurricanes
- There will be 0-25 major hurricanes
OK, let's see who is most accurate again this year!!!
BP Wave Pool? Ok, here's the plan... At some point the oil will get so bad we won't be able to surf in the Gulf. How about a class action claim for BP to build a giant wave pool?... or maybe some weekend tickets to Central America?
Gulf Coast Featured in ESM: The current issue of Eastern Surf Magazine features the Gulf Coast. There's some great pics and articles on the 'Least Coast." Pick up a free copy at your local surf shop or check it out here.
A Class Act: No signs of 'I'm a pro surfer and you're not' attitude here. When pro surfers Timmy Curran and Spencer Regan showed up at 18th Ave for a surf the locals were stoked to see how friendly these guys are. They mixed with the locals, shared waves and experiences and were great ambassadors of good will. Timmy and Spencer are on tour promoting the latest album and video.
She's Back:The Mobile Buoy is finally back in action. Well ..almost.
The original buoy is still missing in action. It went adrift and hasn't been spotted since January. On April 1st it was replaced by another buoy and is now transmitting data. It is located 64 nautical miles south of Dauphin Island, Alabama.
Australia Dominates: Did the Australians have a good year of surfing in 2009 or what? Mick Fanning won the ASP World Tour, Joel Parkinson won the Triple Crown of Surfing, and Taj Burrow won the Pipemasters...if that's not enough... Stephanie Gilmore won the Female ASP World Tour. If it's any consolation, the U.S. had 5 surfers in the top 10 as opposed to 4 for Australia... (and 3 of the top ten are from Florida). Congratulations to our friends down under.
Navarre, Florida Surf Report: Hey, if you want a surf report from

Hurricane Record Lost: Before Ida became a hurricane the 2009 Hurricane Season shared the record with 1982 for the year with the least amount of hurricanes (2). The record is now held solely by 1982.
Boardbag Charges: Going on a surf trip? Here's Surfline's latest breakdown of airline board bag charges. Prices seem to change often so be sure to check with your airline before purchasing a ticket. Also ask about board embargos. There are times when the airlines won't let boards aboard.
